Thomas says, The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge. 

1. Why is it important to ask Q?

(1) Asking questions drives learning. It is the starting point, it is the focus.

(2) Asking questions encourages engagement. Only when students are motivated and eagaged to ...

(3) Asking questions develops critical thinking.

(4) Ask questions stimulates new ideas--helps them think creatively.

(5) Asking students questions provides them with a model of questioning teachniques. --as the successful readers, they predict, they infer, they make connections... they ask good questions about the things they read.

 

2.  What types Qs should they ask?

(1) Right there: the answer is in the illustrations, photographs or text. 

(2) Prior knowledge: the answer is not in the illustrations, photographs or text. (They have to think and may have many different kinds of answers.)

(3) Think and search: the answer is in the illustrations, photographs or text but you need to look for a clue.

 

3. Should you always want a student to give a right answer?

-NO.

Sometimes there can be more than one answer.

There is no one right answer. All of these answers could be correct.

 

4. Should teachers always ask questions?

-NO.

 

5. When can students pracitce asking questions?

(1) Ss asks Qs in Guide Reading.

e.g. What Qs could you ask ... You can use when, where, what, how, why, ...

e.g. What questions can you ask your partner about this information?

Teachers need to creat an environment where asking questions is welcomed and encouraged.

(2) Ss can ask Qs in Group Independent Reading.

e.g. Who has a question to ask about waht we have read?

 

6. Do students always need an answer to the questions?

- NO. It is the thinking is the important.

 

7.  Key points of questioning:

- Ask a variety of Qs

- Ask Qs that make students think, are the most important Qs. Divergent questions that can have many different answers.

- Encourage students to ask Qs - 5W1H: the wondering they are talking, the wondering they are thinking.

- Be careful not to always reward right answers, but rather reward thinking.

- Qs are important because they - drive learning, encourage engagement, develop critical thinking and stimulate new ideas.
